TASK 1: RESEARCH

Employment and education opportunities in your chosen media area

a) THREE JOBS IN YOUR AREA

Use the extensive list of external links on the sidebar of this blog, as well as your own searches to investigate ONE AREA of the media industry (eg. film and TV, video games, advertising, news media, radio, social media planning, the music industry . . . ). You must then post information and career opportunities in THREE potential job roles (eg data wrangler, assistant editor, editor).

Post information about the role on your own blog/Wix, with headings Task 1, Task 2 etc.

This is information about the job role rather than specific jobs going from a company (that comes later, in D, below).

b) PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES

Research the possibilities of working in this sort of job,  are there possible opportunities to do the following:

  1. Freelance opportunities (you work for someone else on a job by job basis)
  2. Possible business opportunities (You set up a company)
  3. Employment opportunities (permanent or salaried job

You could start by searching roles on the BAFTA guru website and Screen Skills .

Write your notes on your blog

c) UNIVERSITY OPTIONS

Research the possibilities of further studying,  are there possible opportunities to do improve on the skill sets you enjoy the most. Find 2 university courses that you think would help you progress onto your chosen employment.

Find course entries and standards as well as what the course will entail. Explain why you think it is a good course and appropriate for yourself.

Start to search for University courses and locations.

d) FIND CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES IN YOUR CHOSEN SECTOR

·      look for actual job adverts in the sector you have chosen (at all levels) and put them in your research - (volunteer, full time, casual, freelance & contract work)

·      Find other possible courses that can support you in your career (short courses, apprenticeships, university, free online course/peer tutorials).

·     Look for festivals, funding opportunities, jobs or career events that might help you.

e) GOALS

During a Learning Conversation, you need to have a one to one careers/progression discussion with your supervisor and/or another media teacher. make notes on the following headers:

·         Short term goals

End of term/Summer – Improving SWOT and Soft/Hard skills

·         Medium-term goals

Completing UAL course/ Applying to University, jobs, training courses, apprenticeships

·         Long term goals

Main career aim or business opportunities – What job or business do you want to end up doing within a particular media industry

H) DRAFT LETTER

Write a draft letter to one of them, asking for 1-3 weeks work experience over Summer/Easter/half term.

Ensure you follow proper letter format.

Don’t write sir/madam at the top of the letter. Go to the trouble of finding out the name of the person to write to, it’s the least you can do to show your interest.

Detail what you are looking for, why, and what skills you can offer.

End by thanking them for their time and put your own details (email and phone number) - you need to make it easy for them to contact you. So much the better if you have a portfolio or LinkedIn profile.

***DO NOT PUBLISH PERSONAL INFORMATION ON YOUR BLOG***

When finished get all your work checked by a teacher.

1.2 Use knowledge and understanding of progression routes to make applications within creative media production higher education or related employment.

NOTE:

Post information NOT screen grabs

(Or if you put screengrabs do writing too!

Eg bullet point job and information about the job

Use quote marks and reference like ‘this’ if you’re taking someone else’s writing eg
